Aurora seen from the space station ripples above the atmosphere

Timelapse footage from orbit captures the southern lights in full motion over the Southern Hemisphere.

In NASA footage, a curtain of green light stretches along the horizon as the International Space Station passes over the night side of Earth. The curtain folds and flickers, with reddish tones at its upper edge.

The faint texture of cloud and ocean is visible below while stars slide past in the background, and part of the station frames the right of the shot.

Aurorae form when charged particles from the Sun interact with Earth’s magnetic field and are seen mostly at high latitudes.
